| The Fields in Winter Brown weeds stand out on the snow-spread prairie, Stippling white surfaces as painters do, A herd of industrious cattle nosing the snow From last year's ungarnered crop; And here a squawking crow and magpie tear The carrion dead along the road. No trees were there for shadows on the country bare, But back of fields that stretch before me rise In solemn dignity and beauty The mountain monarchs to the skies--- High gray outlines that tower in air. --Lisbeth Fish |
